Song of the week, 2 1/2 February 2003:

I've mentioned before my obsession with the online blog recreation of the Samuel Pepys diaries. So, the inspiration for this week's song should be fairly transparent.

Cobbled streets and breakfast beer- things were different then
though politics and gossip never really change
you opened a window onto the women and men
of a world equal parts familiar and strange

and you've got thousands of confidantes that you're never going to meet
reading day by day as you make your fortune and build your fleet
hanging on every word, even when you're indiscreet

I bet your friends down at Will's would all just laugh at us
interpreting a lifetime out of every little word
reading up on your daily habits, making such a fuss
yeah, I suppose to them it would seem absurd

that you've got thousands of confidantes that you're never going to meet
reading day by day as you make your fortune and build your fleet
hanging on every word, even when you're indiscreet

Did you have any idea you would be on display?
Did you hold back, or is everything there?
Were you writing for the future or only for play?
What else might you have had to share?

I feel as if I know you well, though I'll never shake your hand
or go to rowdy parties where you sing
I'll never know if this connection is something that you planned
though I know just how you felt about your job and king

you've got thousands of confidantes that you're never going to meet
reading day by day as you make your fortune and build your fleet
hanging on every word, every time you're indiscreet
