In Front of Me
(c) Mark Frey 2003

Riding a bus down Garfield, glancing 'round at the faces
as buildings and streets slip noisily by
a buck-and a half for the trip and quantity time with strangers
everyone trying to not catch anyone's eye

Staring at the bald spot on the man in front of me
wondering what it's like inside his head
is it good or bad, happy or sad, content or lonely
what nightmares haunt him in his bed?

he's one of the
Mystery people
people that I'll never know
mystery people
I wonder where they go?
Mystery people
on the edges of my life
Mystery people

So many questions begging any answers, right or wrong
it's hard not to assign each one a role
maybe she's a finance banker, he's a fast-food clerk
or a geologist just home from Jackson's Hole

Mystery people
people that I'll never know
mystery people
I wonder where they go?
Mystery people
on the edges of my life
Mystery people

I'll never know anything about them,
I suppose I've no reason to care
but years later I still wonder
did they notice I was there?

Was I one of the
Mystery people
people that they'll never know
mystery people
do they wonder where I go?
Mystery people
on the edges of every life
Mystery people
